Kathy Venter – Sculptor

Kathy Venter is a talented sculptor on Salt Spring Island. Kathy’s South African roots have greatly influenced her life as an artist and her current body of work. From May 30th to September 15th, 2013 Kathy will have a solo exhibition entitled “Life” at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramics in Toronto, Ontario. The show will consist of about 40 sculptures including full life-size figures and head/shoulder busts. Kathy applies a layer of coloured hydro-stone to each sculpture – echoing the “women’s rights of passage” of local tribes in her native South Africa.

The sculpture we are working on is titled “Woman Drawing”. This is the final piece for the Gardiner installation. We started the sculpture in September 2012. As of mid-December the building part of the figure is nearly complete. Kathy uses a unique technique whereby the entire sculpture is hand-built (not cast). The piece is hollow and built slowly from the bottom up.
